Music for Trinity Sunday - May 30th and 31st

Hello St. Francis.
This week we celebrate the feats of Trinity Sunday.  As many preachers will tell you, it may be the most difficult thing to talk about.  It is not easy to understand.  So, let me give it a shot.  The trinity is like our parish family.  We have multiple people with different philosophies, experiences and talents.  These individual gifts make our parish what it is and continues to strive to become.  But, at the center of it all is a unity.  We are one.  Many parts but one family.  It is in our diversity that we are bonded together.  Each of us would not be who we are if not for the other.  Let us pray this week for the wisdom to understand that we do not need to completely understand a concept or a person to truly love and accept them.
Peace.  See you this weekend.

Let us also pray for our young boys and girls who will be receiving Jesus for the first time in the sacrament of the Eucharist.  They come to God's table with such excitement, anticipation, preparedness and awe.  We all could learn something from these beautiful young people.  Let us always be joyful in the knowledge that Jesus calls us all to his table.  Then, go out and invite someone to our family meal.  It is the center of who we are as Christians.  All Are Welcome!!!

Below are the links to the music we will be praying this weekend.  Warm up those vocal cords and be ready to praise the Lord with us!!!

St. Francis De Sales to host a benefit concert on Thursday, June 11th at 7:00

Dear St. Francis,
I am incredibly excited to announce that St. Francis De Sales will be hosting a concert featuring the young men of the Newark Boys Chorus School.  This group of amazing young singers perform throughout the United States and internationally and are the 2015 Jerseyarts.com winner of the 'Best Choral Group in New Jersey".  The beautiful music can only be matched the the inspiring story of this school.

The suggested donation of $20 will help defray the cost of transportation and will allow the boys the opportunity to spend the day in New York City.  The concert will be recorded onto dvd and will be the first such video released by the school.  This is a tremendous way for us as a parish to support our young people and the importance of education and the arts.

The Newark Boys Chorus was founded in 1966 to create an integrated academic and music program unique to the city of Newark, New Jersey. Much has changed since NBCS first opened its doors, but what has not changed are our guiding principles and values.  Our mission is to provide a complete education of the mind and heart, seeking excellence as well as a compassion for humanity, to empower young men to foster a lifelong love of music, and to make a high quality education accessible to the young people of Newark and the surrounding communities. These principles are not just admired from afar; they are the ideals that our administration, faculty, staff and alumni strive for on a daily basis.

During this time when Fine and Performing Arts Education is but an afterthought in many communities, Newark Boys Chorus School continues to celebrate the gift of music and strives to stand as a beacon of what a comprehensive educational experience should be. The experience of participating in the tradition of the NBCS performance-based music program feeds the soul of our students and fosters the discipline, perseverance and poise critical to becoming successful men.

Now more than ever we depend on the very best in all of us to help provide the connection and promise an NBCS education offers.  As families struggle to make a better life for their children in this time of social distress and economic difficulties, many fine parents have made an amazing sacrifice to provide their children with the opportunity to succeed as a student and experience the world by sending their son to Newark Boys Chorus School.  We all recognize that many young people wake up every morning to the sound of sirens as opposed to serenity.  Many young people have been exposed to the ugliness of violence, addiction and a society that has devalued the importance of preparing them to be socially aware contributing citizens of the world.  At NBCS, we see the future.  We know we are preparing the next generation of leaders, doctors, lawyers and musicians to lead our world into a brighter tomorrow.

Music for Pentecost - May 23rd and 24th

Hello St. Francis.
This week we celebrate the feast of the Pentecost.  The Holy Spirit descends upon the Apostles and lights the flame of evangelization within them.  The Holy Spirit also comes to us and challenges us to go out into our world and be the hands, feet, heart and voice of God.  Our call is a simple one.  Love your neighbor and be a model of the joy of the Gospel.  Our message is also simple.  If we live our lives with an inner peace and with a joy that transcends our burdens then people will notice.  People will ask.  When they do, it is the power of the Holy Spirit that arms us with the wisdom to share our message of faith and share with others the story of our faith community.  It is the Spirit that will be standing with us when we invite others to experience Jesus.  Pray this week that we all will be worthy instruments of the power of the Spirit.  Bring someone to church this week.  Let them see the power of the Spirit at work in our family.  Sing a little louder this week.  Pray a little more fervently and know it is the Spirit of our risen Lord that gives us the depth to do just that.
Peace.
Jim

Music That Celebrates The Ascension - Links for the music for May 16th and 17th

Hello St. Francis.
This week the Music Ministry is armed with two themes as we celebrate the 7th Week of Easter and also the Ascension of Jesus.  As you know, the disciples were a group that was filled with a great deal of fear.  They were fearful when Jesus left them on Good Friday.  They did not know where to turn for the answers and felt alone.  They were also fearful after the Ascension.  Once again, they hid from the world and could not discern the next step in their lives and ministry.  Fortunately for us, we know that soon the Holy Spirit will descend upon them and start a fire that his illuminated our faith for 2,000 years.  After the Pentecost, they went out to all nations preaching Jesus' message of love, forgiveness and peace.
This week, we praise the Lord with an energy and a spirit that can only be fueled by God's grace.  Although from time to time we may also be fearful of our call to evangelize the world, we know that with God nothing is impossible and we know that within our parish community, we will find the support and encouragement to "Go Out And Tell".  We sing of Jesus' wonderful name, we praise and exalt our Father and thank Him for the light and the fire he has created within us.
On this special weekend, I encourage you to SING WITH YOUR HEART as well as your VOICE.  CLAP YOUR HANDS and come to full participation in the prayer we pray.
I can't wait to pray and praise with you this weekend.
Peace,
Jim

Music for May 9th and 10th - Music in Liturgy

Hello St. Francis!!!
Music in the Liturgy can be an inspiring and spiritually nourishing part of the prayer and community experience.  It happens so often that I am touched by something that is said in a song or just by the beauty of the melodies and harmonies of a piece of music.  When you can combine that with the message of scripture and the vision of a parish family, you can help to both reinforce the message of God's love and provide a memory that can last far beyond the moment we walk out of church.  I encourage you not only to appreciate the beauty of the music but also pray and meditate on the message of the music.  We are a very special place where there are no boundaries and all are welcome.  We try our best through the grace and wisdom of God to provide a time of prayer, celebration and community with every note of every song.  Maybe, you would consider joining us as a minister of music in the choir or with an instrument.  Maybe, you will consider singing just a little bit louder and praising God just a little bit more this week...Try it, you will like it.
Jim
